February 24, 2022

During this guest lecture/workshop, we discussed what it entails to have a pragmatic approach to contemporary problems. This was done by exploring both the academic side where the concept of intersectionality was introduced and practical side of how intersectionality can be implemented in policy-making. After the lecture we went to Eik en Linde for some drinks! 🥂🤩

Guest lecture by Lucia Banotti

November 11, 2021

We were very excited to have Dr. Lucia Banotti give our first on-site guest lecture! During the lecture Lucia spoke to us about the issue of non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (NCII) as a form of online gender-based abuse. The lecture addressed the questions: why is it important to pay attention to this issue? And why should we avoid the more common expression ‘revenge porn’ to refer to such a phenomenon? 🤔 The event explored the notion of consent, the practices of non-consensual dissemination of intimate images on Telegram, and the ways in which such a phenomenon is rooted in cultural norms and persisting gender stereotypes. Our members also had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts on the issue.

Overall, this was a super relevant and insightful lecture!

Panel Discussion: Sex Work – Bringing Down the Taboos, Stigmas and Misconceptions

May 10, 2021

We, together with UNICEF Student Team Amsterdam, were very excited to announce our online panel discussion on “Sex Work – Bringing Down the Taboos, Stigmas, and Misconceptions”! During this event, we addressed questions such as: What are the different misconceptions surrounding sex work? How are these sustained, and how to they impact sex workers and the stigma around the profession? In what ways is intersectionality essential to understand the reality of sex work? What are the different paths for policy-making and legislation? 🤩

In total, there were four panelists from either academia (Marije van Stempvoort), the policy sector (Henk Werson), or the sex work industry (Lyle Muns & Yvette Luhrs), who guided us through different aspects of sex work, whilst sharing their stories, expertise and perspectives.

International Women’s Day: March & Quiz

March 7 & 8, 2021

To celebrate International Women’s day, we had prepared not one, but two events! 🥳💗

On March 7th, Women’s March Nederland organised a static demonstration, followed by inspirational speakers. Because of limited spots, only some of the HeForShe x UvA board and members managed to join; however, the rest was able to attend the online demonstration! So, while of course respecting COVID-measures, we were able to come together and show support against racism and sexism! 🙌🏻

We also had an International Women’s Day Quiz on March 8th, in which we both had fun and learned some interesting things about women’s rights. Congratulations to all the winners! 🏆
